How to Install Plumbing for a Shower

If you are preparing to install a shower, you must first determine the plumbing size. The size of the pipes will depend on the type of valve you choose and the distance from the wall. If installing a three-handle valve, you may have to use wider supply pipes. When installing a shower valve, you need to follow the instructions carefully. A typical valve has two inlet ports and one outlet for the shower head. Its ports usually have female threads. Most plumbers will screw copper adapters into sweat adapters before installing copper pipes in the shower walls.

Once you have determined the plumbing size, you can replace the faucet. In general, faucets should be 14 by 14 inches. You can use a drill to drill small holes in the wall. In the case of plastered walls, you can use an exercise to dig through the wall. Make sure to use small screws and drill bits for accurate drilling. Next, you need to connect the hot and cold water lines. You must also secure the drain and waste lines.

Before beginning, you must turn off the shower water valve. This valve is usually installed in the entire house, so you should be careful not to damage it. It would help if you also disconnected the showerhead pipe from the faucet. You can also use a union fitting to connect the supply lines to the faucet.

When installing a drain fitting, you must ensure that the pipe is at least 3/4 inch below the lip of the shower drain. You may have to test fit the shower base to measure this distance. If you can't get the correct measurement, you can cut the pipe with a plastic tubing cutter or a hacksaw. Always remember to make the cuts flat.

Installing a new drain is simple. The most important part of the installation is the plumbing. Make sure you use high-quality materials. If you have any doubts, consult a qualified plumber to install the plumbing. If you are replacing an existing drain, make sure that you buy high-quality pipes.

Before you install a shower arm, you must remove any wallcovering that may be covering the space. Next, remove the drywall from the bathroom. This will be the place where the controls will go. Remember to follow the plumbing codes in your area. If you want to install a shower seat, a knowledgeable installer can significantly help.

Connect the hot and cold water lines to the valve. Then, run a pipe from the valve to the location of the shower arm or shower head. Remember to attach the hand shower hose. Once you have everything in place, you can connect the shower valve using an electric screwdriver. Always ensure that the valve is level and marked "UP."
